Dear Melissa Michelson:

I would say it always helps to have an MA degree in museum studies in order
to obtain work in a museum. You will probably encounter competition from
other position seekers who do have MAs and therefore more specialized
knowledge and experience. You have to be an American citizen in order to
get a federal position with the US Gov't, but this is usually not the case
with private institutions- or even state museums.

Subject: Do I need a Masters?

I would like to work in a US musuem (like many of the subscribers here) but
am
wondering if I need a Masters to be considered. As it is, it has been
difficult with just my BA-- would you say it were equally difficult with an
MA?

Also, if I were to get a Masters, do US museums only acknowledge MAs from
American universities, or would they also accept, say a "Magister" (the
equivalent, also involving a thesis and 6+ years total in a university)
from a German university.
(I am American and got my BA in Art History from an American University)

Thanks in advance for a reply.
