In response to question #1, not necessarily. We have two branches of our
museum at universities. One provides only educational and outreach
functions (programs, exhibits, etc.) not research. The other provides
mainly educational and outreach functions but also provides collections
assistance to departments that own collections but may curate them rather
unevenly. They also provide collections assistance to departments that
curate their collections just fine and conduct research on them, but may
need help making them more accessible whether to a larger number of
students or to the general public. Many students can go complete a 4 year
degree and never know that a university holds extensive collections. We do
not have museum research staff at the branches but we do have educational
and collections staff that can assist university researchers with their
educational and collections functions.
