I believe salaries should be posted. If the salary is too low, nobody
will apply and the institution holding the job will learn a big lesson.
If the salary isn't posted, SOMEONE will bite at the job and then the
institution can somehow convince them that despite the low salary, there
is opportunity to advance or that there is some other advantage that may
not actually happen--meanwhile, the poor applicant/employee is hooked
and stuck for a while. That shouldn't happen to anyone.
I actually once knew the salary of a job I was interested in was lower
than I wanted but I interviewed anyway, got THEM hooked on ME, and then
requested (and received) the salary I wanted and deserved for the job.
But the key was, I knew the salary level going in and could demonstrate
my worth. Maybe that's the ticket--not lobbying for higher salary
levels, but knowing your own worth and not settling for less.
