VISUAL ARTS ALBERTA ASSOCIATION

ATTENTION ALBERTA ARTISTS!

Please read the following carefully and thoroughly as it pertains to the
status of your file at the Visual Arts Resource Centre.

The bank of artist files, housed at Beaver House, was instituted by the
Visual Arts Branch of Alberta Culture and Multiculturalism in the mid-1970's
to act primarily as a business and research resource. Visual Arts Alberta
Association (VAAA), in partnership with the AFA and Alberta Community
Development, is now upgrading, expanding, and will be the long term
maintainer of the artist files as part of the Visual Arts Resource Centre.
The VAAA is the Provincial Arts Service Organization (PASO) for the visual
arts in Alberta.

The Centre is a rich resource of information on Alberta artists. It needs
to be preserved and replenished so that it can provide the best possible
information to all those interested in Alberta artistic activity. The
Centre will contain resources such as artist files, a visual arts library,
slide library and other methods of information management.

In 1995 the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act was
proclaimed in force. This act provides protection for personal information
held by government departments and agencies. Except in specific and limited
cases, information about individuals is not provided to other persons
without the consent of the individual.

The purpose of the attached form is to seek written consent from artists (or
the Executors of their estates) to allow public access to the personal
information contained in these files. The purposes of this access will be
to allow research into and promotion of the arts. Some examples of the
uses which might be made of the information are: biographical articles about
Alberta artists, exhibition and curatorial information, university art
history research papers etc.

Please Note: The artist files are separate from, and independent of, the
AFA art collection. The permission sought from artists does not relate to
works purchased or owned by the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

Public requests for access will be required to be in writing so frequency
and purpose of use of the Visual Arts Resource Centre can be monitored and
evaluated over time. Only researchers, commercial and public galleries,
organizations and businesses will be permitted to apply for access to the
personal information.

The other purpose of the form is to get current contact information from
artists and to request any documentation (i.e. slides, press
coverage/reviews, publications etc.) that mentions the artist and/or their
work. This will ensure that the artist files are as up to date as possible.
Once the files are updated, it is requested that each artist help maintain
their files by sending regular (i.e. yearly) updates and additions.
Generally each artist file at the Resource Centre may contain all or some of
the following items: c.v., slides, exhibition catalogues, bibliographies,
newspaper articles etc.

If you are an Alberta artist and currently do not have a file at the Visual
Arts Resource Centre, you may establish one by filling out the form and
forwarding the items listed previously.

Please Note: The Visual Arts Resource Centre is not yet accessible to the
public.
Please fill in the following information so that a current Alberta Artist
contact list can be established and maintained.
