Patrick,
I also read an article recently (can't remember where) about eastern Europe
and the mass destruction of commemorative sculptures as power changes
hands. Milan Kundera deals with this forced "forgetting" in his book "Of
Laughter and Forgetting." Originally from the Czech republic, Kundera
tells a story of a town where the street names change so frequently
depending on the prevailing political power that people no longer have a
collective history. It is an eloquent and telling piece.
