Vee Housman is among those of us who simply need to trust in the volunteers
we are able to enlist, and do something if that trust is violated.

Mostly, it's a matter of reassigning to lighter duties an aging lady who's
given great guided tours in years past but who's losing her memory a bit.
Or replacing a teen intern who may be into smoking the wrong thing on
premises.

I suspect in terms of numbers of institutions, the small town ones like
ours are in the majority.

There's another problem with these "conflicts" that hasn't been mentioned.
The great fundraiser on a museum's board -- the one who can really bring in
the big gifts -- is also doing it for her church, sometimes asking the same
people. The museum gets less from these double-asked donors and so does
the church.

I still believe very much in the case-by-case approach. Conflict of
interest is part of volunteer orientation, for certainly conflicts of
interest can arise in areas outside of the collections
