Neat Stuff:  Using Objects to Explore Women's History
An Ontario Women's History Network Conference

*Workshop Goal*:
This  workshop is designed to enable historians, students, and
researchers of women's history to use personal, family, community  and
museum objects in the research and interpretation of women's history.
The use of objects to demonstrate, educate, interpret and illustrate
aspects of women's history will be explored through hands-on activity
with objects, group discussion and report back, presentations,
exhibition
review and a behind the scenes tour of collections.

*Audience*:
Academics, historians, sociologists, teachers, archivists and students
of women's history may be interested in exploring the methodology of
material culture studies.

*Outcomes*:
The workshop will enable workshop participants to:

* understand past and present traditions and practices of collecting and
exhibiting objects in public and private domains

* interpret women's history through the use of objects and collections

* use objects and collections as primary sources in women's history
research

Location:
Sponsored by the History Division of the Canadian Museum of Civilization
(Hull) and the National Museum of Science and Technology (Ottawa) ,
the workshop location will offer participants a glimpse of the hidden
and often neglected resources of a museum collection in storage, as well
as the opportunity to explore some approaches to the ways in which these
collections can be interpreted and used for  exhibition development.

For those wishing to extend their stay, the collections of the national
Capital Region offer a full weekend of activity.

SCHEDULE:
Friday, October 3:
The program opens with a reception and tour of the exhibit on domestic
technology, "Love, Leisure and Laundry" at the National Museum of
Science and Technology (tour: 4-5pm; reception: 5-7pm).
Cost for tour & reception: $15 Canadian
