Second Annual
Baja California Botanical Symposium
August 14-16, 1997
presented by
The San Diego Natural History Museum
and co-sponsored by
The Universidad Autónoma de
Baja California
Facultad de Ciencias
Herbario BCMEX
Symposium Background
The Baja Californian region is a floristically diverse area of
northwestern Mexico that can still be considered a scientific frontier.
This symposium provides an international forum for botanical
researchers investigating the flora of the peninsula and adjacent areas
to present their findings and meet other scientists working in this
region. The symposium is binational in format and content and will be
conducted in Spanish and English. Topics of interest are drawn from most
botanical disciplines including: taxonomy/systematics, biogeography,
vegetation/community analysis, ecology, floristics, biodiversity,
ethnobotany, conservation, evolution, and paleobotany.
The Baja California Botanical Symposium is a series of annual
meetings that rotates annually between the U.S. and Mexico. The
successful first symposium took place in Ensenada, Baja California, in
1996. The second annual symposium will be presented by the San Diego
Natural History Museum and will be held at the Museum in Balboa Park, San
Diego, California.
Symposium Logistics
The program will begin with an icebreaker reception on Thursday
evening. Friday and Saturday sessions will feature approximately 23
technical paper presentations by a variety of speakers representing a
range of botanical studies including systematics, ecology, floristics,
paleobiogeography, lichenology, biodiversity analysis, conservation,
hybridization, and vegetation studies. A poster session will also be
presented. A banquet at Quail Botanical Gardens on Friday night will
highlight Dr. Reid Moran and his keynote address entitled "Guadalupe
Island and its flora, what's left of it." Saturday afternoon will
conclude the formal presentations.
The registration fee includes the cost of the reception, coffee
breaks, Friday and Saturday lunches, and all handouts. The Friday night
banquet and keynote address are optional and not included in the price of
basic or student registration fees. The costs of other meals,
transportation and lodging are not covered in the fee. A list of hotels
and motels in the area will be sent to registrants, upon request.
A published proceedings of the symposium is planned, but is
contingent upon funding in order to cover publication and editorial
expenses. Technical paper presentation during the symposium does not
automatically warrant publication since manuscripts must be
scientifically refereed, evaluated and edited in order to be published in
a proceedings issue.
The San Diego Natural History Museum
The San Diego Natural History Museum (SDNHM) is part of
the Balboa Park museum community. It was established by the San Diego
Society of Natural History, which was founded in 1874. The museum houses
over 7 million specimens, the Biodiversity Research Center of the
Californias, a reference library, an education department, and two floors
of exhibit galleries. The museum is accredited by the American
Association of Museums. The San Diego Natural History Museum is dedicated
to providing biological and geological expertise and education for
southern California and Baja California.
The SDNHM herbarium (SD) houses approximately 140,000
specimens of higher plants, bryophytes, algae, and fungi, including 321
types. The majority of the collection is regional and focuses on southern
California and Baja California. The most important collections include
Dr. Reid Moran's accessions from Baja California and the Crassulaceae;
historical collections by Frank Gander and Daniel Cleveland; and recent
material in the Cactaceae.
The SDNHM collections are part of the museum’s
Biodiversity Research Center of the Californias (BRCC), which supports
the San Diego Natural History Museum's mission by providing the
scientific foundation for its operations and programs. The BRCC seeks to
fulfill this mission through the discovery , description, and
understanding of the natural environment of the museum's region and how
that region is integrated with the wider world.
