Flares contain explosives which may become unstable with time and
could spontaneously ignite.  Modern flares have an expiry date of
three years from the date of manufacture.  It is possible to
de-activate flares without jeapordizing the artifacts but, for obvious
reasons, this should only be done by an explosives expert.
