To anyone:
I am an exhibitions curator who came from the world of art
journalism--for 10 years or so I've been writing reviews and features
about contemporary art. For the last 6, I've also been working for a
museum. In our small area of Western New York (which seems to be losing
population!), the pool of qualified reviewers is rather small--I seem to
be the only one who reviews for such publications as Art News, Artforum,
etc. There is only one other established art critic and he writes for
Buffalo's single newspaper. I've also ocasionally published things in
the area "alternative" arts paper (which doesn't pay). Aside from the
obvious prohibition of reviewing shows at my own institution, what other
restrictions should there be? Do any of you have guidelines for this?
Thanks for any input.
