AMERICANS REMEMBER THE CIVIL WAR: SCHOLARSHIP, PRESERVATION, AND PUBLIC MEMORY
APRIL 4 AND 5 1997 AT MURRAY STATE UNIVERSITY
"Americans Remember the Civil War" will bring together those interested in
the study of the Civil War and the preservation and interpretation of Civil
War sites for a two day conference to share the results of ongoing research
and preservation efforts and explore new aspects of the Civil War. In
addition to formal sessions the conference will promote informal discussion
and dialogue through meals, receptions, and a tour of the Civil War
fortifications at Columbus-Belmont State Park.
Featured speakers include: Catherine Clinton, author of <Tara Revisited>;
John Y. Simon, editor of <The Papers of U.S. Grant>; Emory Thomas, author of
<Robert E. Lee: A Biography>; Kerry A. Trask, author of <The Fire Within: A
Civil War Narrative from Wisconsin>; and Brian S. Wills, <author of <A
Battle from the Start: The Life of Nathan Bedford Forrest.>
Concurrent sessions include:

Modern Preservation Efforts and the Develpment of Battlefields
The Northern Homefront
Women, Marriage, and the War
General's Wives
Military History of the War
Kentucky During and After the War
Public Memory and the Civil War
Southerners Remember the Civil War
Forgotten Heroines of the Lost Cause: Southern Women Remember the Civil War

Registration fee will be approximately $50 inclusive of all meals and tours.
