The stuff in stove windows was indeed known as eisenglass, but also as
mica, a naturally occurring mineral.  It is translucent and it flakes off
in thin sheets.  The Connecticut River valley was dotted with small mica
quarries in the 19th century.  You can probably get some through the
sources for mineral samples.
