Christine raises a very good point. While it would be great to take the time to
do enough good research to develop a paper fit for publication, as an adjunct
to an exhibition, it is rare that we have the time to do it, other than in the
case of exhibitions of war art, where a catalogue is being prepared. More
often, we only have the staff time to do enough research to present a
reasonable exhibition.
We recently were in an odd position. In the midst of developing an exhibition
of war art associated with the Battle of Vimy Ridge (began 9 April 1917), we
were asked by the French embassy to work with them to develop a virtual
exhibition on their WWW site on the Battle, to which we contributed images of
the war art, labels and textual information, including a general introduction
to the battle. Close, but no cigar, er, publication!
On June 13th, we'll open a major (for us!) exhibition called "We'll Meet Again"
which features the stories of 25 "ordinary" Canadians and how war changed their
relationships with loved ones. Some happy stories, some sad, from the period
1914 - 1994. It would make a delightful publication or souvenir book but -
alas! - no time and no money to do it!
