Greetings,
A number of people responded to my request for contacts on training museum
staff around issues of racial/cultural diversity. One part of our training
will be a program titled, "A World of Difference," developed by the
Anti-Defamation League, in which our staff museum-wide "must" participate
(in the words of our CEO - the importance of who's support and
participation can not be overstated).
Many also expressed interest in the _Amistad_ project in general. Thus I
wish to announce a new web page on this project. For those of you who have
no idea what I'm talking about, Mystic Seaport is planning on building a
replica of a topsail schooner on which, in 1839, there was a "slave
revolt." When this Spanish-flagged vessel was captured by a Revenue Cutter
and brought in to New London, CT, an international "affair" ensued; this
event provided a point around which the Abolitionist movement coalesed.
The story is an important event in African-American history, and more
precisely - in the struggle for human rights in this country, but not
generally known in many circles.
Check out the web page at:

Thanks for your interest.
Edward
