It might be a long shot, but you could contact my friends at the Historical
Museum at Fort Missoula, Montana. Apparently the fort was built in the
1870s. Their oldest building dates to 1877, I believe. I don't know about
the 5th Infantry, but the black 25th was HQ'd there from 1888 on. Ask the
Curator Jane Richards, or the Educator Darla Bruner if there is any info on
the 5th's operations in the NW. The phone number in 406/728-3476. If they
don't have anything, they might be able to tell you where to look.
