Susan,
Our policy is that staff have no right to privacy when using institutional
email. However, management would have to have an extremely good reason to
be permitted to read another staff person's email. I manage the museum's
Internet mail services and I would not allow access unless there was a very
good reason.(of course I could be easily over-ruled by the museum
president) In the last three years, no one has been given access to
another's email, and the only time I access a staff person's account is to
fix a problem (and with that staff person's knowledge). I would consider
it extremely unethical to access another mail account with out a very good
reason.
Good reasons:
-a threat to the museum's security or a threat to another staff person.
-good indication of illegal or prohibited use of the account.
Poor reason:
-looking for trouble without any evidence of misuse.
