The Wax Cylinder recordings of the Ainu people of the Sakhalin Island (recorde
d in 1903-1904 by the Lithuanian Anthropologist, Bronislaw Pilsudski 1866-1918
) was successfully converted into digital media by the University of Hokkaido
with the technical support of Sony Inc. about five years ago in Japan . The
digital convertion took place soon after it was discovered in an old unused st
orage at Poznani University in Poland. The founding itself was a tremendous n
ews as the Ainus no more live in Sakhalin because they were forced to immigrat
e to Hokkaido after the WW2. Anthropologists and, especially the Ainus were e
xtremely excited to hear the clear recorded conversation and songs of the Sakh
alin Ainus' dialect which was forgotten for over 80 years.
I'll check out how the digitalized convertion of the original wax cylinders of
the co called Pilsudski recordings were done.
Report will follow in Museum-L next week hopefully.
