You should probably use a copy stand rather than a tripod. In a copy stand,
the camera is placed on a platform horizontally with the lens pointing
downwards through a hole, the book (or whatever) is held flat, and
floodlights are pointed down towards the book at a 45-degree angle to avoid
glare and hot spots. You should always use a cable release as well so the
camera isn't being jiggled while it's taking the picture.
If you are associated with, or have access to, a university someone probably
has a copy stand somewhere: check with the art or art history department's
slide librarian first. If not, many of your better photo labs do copy stand
work.
