WORKSHOP: "MUSEUMS ON THE WWW: ENHANCING YOUR SITE"
February 19-21, 1997, with David Jakob, offered through
the Cultural Resource Management Program at the University of Victoria

In keeping with the theme of the most recent issue of "Museum News"--
the ever-expanding topic of "Museums on the World Wide Web", I wanted
to share with you information on our upcoming workshop designed for
World Wide Web content developers, managers responsible for Web sites
and Web information products, and those responsible for Internet marketing,
to expand your basic knowledge of the Internet and WWW site design,
to better understand the capabilities of the technologies and fundamental
issues involved in budget and timeline management, and to illustrate the
growing importance of Internet marketing strategies and techniques.
For those with less experience with the World Wide Web, there are
pre-course readings and exercises to help bring you up to speed.
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This three day workshop expands your basic knowledge of the Internet
and WWW site design (including planning, development, maintenance, and
marketing); advanced HTML; and design techniques including more
sophisticated approaches to the use of text, graphics, video and audio
in your museum Web site. You will also explore the characteristics and
potential of such tools as CGI programming, Java scripts and applets,
Shockwave, RealAudio, and other new Internet technologies, and learn
how and when to apply them to your existing museum site or to plan new
sites. The University's IBM Computer Lab provides you with hands-on
opportunities to explore the use of these tools, and comprehensive
course and supplementary materials provide you with a valuable resource.
You are welcome to bring your existing site and some sample text,
graphics, sound or audio on disk to work with, or come prepared to
develop your skills on a hypothetical site.
General knowledge of the Internet and experience surfing the World
Wide Web using Netscape Navigator or Microsoft Internet Explorer, as
well as basic knowledge of HTML and web development is recommended but
not necessary. Pre-course readings and exercises will be made available
two weeks prior to the course (upon registration) for those who are
not familiar with HTML.
Instructor: David Jakob is an information management consultant with
extensive teaching and WWW site development experience
