I don't think you really have to leave the subject line blank.  I know
the documentation always says that, but when I signoff a list i almost
never leave the subject blank  (I'll use the reply command for some old
piece of mail from some listserv - usually not even the right listserv,
most of them will forward it) and I've never had a signoff rejected
because the subj line wasn't blank.
