As a person with dual lives, one as a social science professional AND
one with 13 years of museum experience as a teacher, marketing person,
and ad hoc researcher, and... and... (hey, it's a museum, how many of
us have just one job!! :) )), I know that I've had training in BOTH
what the museum needs/wants AND what works in terms of data gathering
techniques, including both ideal and realistic practices. The real
trick is in implementation and explaining, on both sides, some of the
limitations and benefits (not the least of which are budgetary
constraints).
I am very pleased to say that I have managed to combine these roles in
my current position as a Research Analyst at the Association of
Science-Technology Centers. Right now, I am currently involved in a
number of projects and information-oriented services. While we have
not concentrated on visitor studies as a service to our members, it is
certainly an area worthy of consideration.
