The following is a quarterly announcement from the Southeastern
     Library Network (SOLINET).

SOLINET is pleased to introduce our spring 1997 preservation workshop
     schedule.

***********PRESERVING COLLECTIONS IN A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT***********

PRESERVING COLLECTIONS IN A HOSTILE ENVIRONMENT: ENVIRONMENTAL
CONTROL AND MONITORING. Thursday, April 24, 1997, 9:00 am to 4 pm, at
Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA. The most cost-effective
strategy to preserve our documentary resources is by controlling
temperature, relative humidity, and pollutants. This workshop will
help library staff identify the source of problems, monitor the
environment, and develop strategies for affecting change in their
institution. It will include an extensive packet of resource
materials, plus exhibits of state-of-the-art monitoring equipment.
The instructor for this workshop will be Dr. Michael Trinkley,
Director, Chicora Foundation. Cost is $85 for SOLINET Members, $125
for non-members and FEDLINK. Any institution in Louisiana qualifies
for the member rate. A $10 discount is offered for those registering
prior to April 3rd. For further information or to register, contact
     Ginger Edmonson at 1-800-999-8558.

     *****************DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND RECOVERY******************

Help your institution learn how to prepare for and deal with emergency
situations. Sign up now for SOLINET's "DISASTER PREPAREDNESS AND
RECOVERY" workshops on Thursday, May 8, 1997, at Mobile Public
Library, Mobile, AL, and on Tuesday, June 10, 1997 at Birmingham
     Public Library, Birmingham, AL.

This workshop will provide the training necessary to plan, organize
and execute a disaster plan and salvage operation. In addition to
in-depth discussion on the disaster planning process, there will be
demonstrations of salvage techniques including air-drying books,
separating and drying manuscripts, rinsing books, and drying
photographic materials. The course is designed for staff members
interested in or responsible for organizing and implementing
institutional or cooperative disaster preparedness and response
