The virtues of manual compact shelving is that in the event of a power
outtage (say, during a thunderstorm, fire, earthquake, etc) the material
stored on the shelving is still accessible. Also, maunual systems are
less expensive to maintain and less prone to technological difficulties.
I'd vote for manual compact shelving any day, wheels over crank. (Heck,
I'm only 5'2" and weigh under 100 lbs and have 0 problems moving the
shelving.)
Note: The Anniston Museum does not have compact shelving; my experiences
in this matter were gained elsewhere.
