I also agree with Erik. If the library profession is happy with the word,
why shouldn't museum people be? A library is a collection of books and
other research oriented materials from which people learn about their
world. Period (or Full Stop if you're British). Until the library
profession redefines itself for us i think we should be happy with the word
it provides. When you say "library" I think everyone knows what it means.
Try to call it a "learning center" and people might think Kindercare. Why
not just leave it alone.
