I DOUBT if "overexposure" to "artspeak and academicalese" is the root cause
of poor language skills. Rather, any deficiency in verbal ability is
aggravated by reliance on a vocabulary one doesn't *quite* understand. Who
hasn't read labels, articles, etc. that abuse "artspeak"? Overuse of a
specialized lexicon is inevitably alienating to a non-academic audience.
However, rest assured there ARE people who understand and use properly the
aforementioned "academicalese." It has a place, even if that place is not on
a wall label.
