I think that one of the most incredible developers of exhibitions for
children and their caretakers for museums is Janet Kamien -- she developed
exhibitions on disabilities and death and dieing -- 1970's and 1980's --
far before the topics were acceptable table conversation (or under the
table conversations) for The Children's Museum in Boston. (Talk-back
boards were probably invented then?!! And, they are wonderful, for
patrons and staff.) The text was sensitive, sometimes humorous, and gave
people information and opportunities to explore unfamiliar, or all too
familiar, realms of humankind. Sometimes, you have to take chances and
believe that people want to understand the world in which they live.
