I stumbled upon this book a few years ago and found it quite good as an
introduction. His current project sounds a lot like Julian Jaynes' "The
Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind" (1976,
Houghton Mifflin). That's a fascinating and odd book that influenced
Neal Stephenson's best-selling Science Fiction "Snow Crash," which, in
turn, is influencing those building metaworlds and avatars online.
Check out Leonardo On-Line
(http://www-mitpress.mit.edu/Leonardo/home.html), The International
Society of the Arts, Sciences and Technology Web site.
I'd also recommend A. Richard Turner's "Inventing Leonardo" (1993,
Knopf)
Also anything by N. Katherine Hayles, who writes on Chaos and Literary
theory.
