I can't give you any details, but Shozo Sato, a friend of my aunt's and
uncle's, was instrumental in developing a center of some sort for Japanese
studies at the University of Illinois. His primary focus was drama - he has
had quite a bit of success in translating Kabuki plays into English and
training Western actors in the traditional movements and voice inflections
of this style. He has also developed Kabuki-style adaptations of classic
dramas such as Medea, which have done quite well. He is also a
calligrapher, painter and flower arranger. He has retired from the
University but I would suggest you get in touch with U of Illinois and
inquire into their programs. If this doesn't help, I may have his current
address and phone # squirreled away at home - let me know if you would like
to have it.
