Richard,
I have switched from old hygrothermographs to Smartreader 2's
from ACR Systems, Inc. These are small, about the size of a
cigarette pack, computer recorders that can take measurements
of temperature and humidity at various intervals set by the
user up to a 30 minute sampling interval. They are downloaded
to IBM compatable computers using Smartreader Windows software
(called Trendreader for Windows) through a plugin wire that connects
to an RS232C 9 pin port (or 25 pin with an adapter). There is no
ink or paper charts to mess with. The software produces the graphs.
I love them. We have 19 of them around the State Museum building.
The run around $720 each (and a remote can be attached for about
$150 more to take samples from inside and outside exhibit cases,
for example).
There are other computer based samplers on the market. I
can't speak for those, though. However, I will not go back to
a typical hygrothermograph which I find isn't as sensitive to
variations as the Smartreaders.
