I am interested to hear from list members regarding their institution's use
of graphic design services:
How many of you have in-house graphic artists? If you do, how large is your
institution's budget? What type of background do you seek in such staff
members?
If you use outside designers, do you only use local firms? Would you consider
queries from freelance designers? What advice can you give to freelancers,
esp. non-local ones, in approaching your organization?
I have work experience as a writer/researcher for a large science museum,
have worked for ASTC publications, and am now back in school, building a
graphic design portfolio at VCU in Richmond, VA. I am looking for some
insights that might help me to secure either freelance or staff work in
graphics. I think my background and variety of experience would contribute a
lot to a museum, but I am unsure how big or open this particular museum field
is.
Any advice would be appreciated!
