Thank you to all of you who responded to my query. I'm posting here the
results since several people indicated an interest in this thread.
RESULTS
One individual first sent 50 cold letters to museums in a CA region and used
certain parameters: 3 f-t employees. She received 3 letters stating they
were cutting back on staff rather than hiring staff. Then she sent out
100 more resumes to CA regions w/o using any parameters. This resulted in
an informational interview which led to a position at that museum within a
year. (Correction: Location (CA) would be one parameter.)
Another individual with specialized training used several parameters: size
of museum he was interested in, category of museum, and geographic locations.
He sent out 25 resumes to natural history museums. The one interview he had
led to a job at the museum.
Another individual and his fiancee sent out resumes to museums in NY. Her
cold resumes led to three interviews and a job. His job was the result of
responding to an announcement that had been faxed to museums but not
advertised elsewhere. I don't know how many cold resumes they sent out. An
interesting datum was that at the place where she works, there may be
anywhere between 2-6 job openings which get filled within weeks. Other
parameters were not mentioned in the response.
Lastly, one person indicated that he knew of only one person who got a
position through cold calls.
I'll post related information in P.2
