The Southern Oregon Historical Society in Medford, Or. is currently working
on an exhibit "Miner, Baker, Furniture Maker" which features 19th century
technologies. One of the spaces will interpret a cabinet shop. We have
limited space, but we hope to illustrate how power was delivered from a
steam engine via a drive system with belts and pulleys and eventually to
wood-working machines. We will only be able to illustrate the steam engine
part in 2D but we hope to have a drive shaft (powered by a hidden electric
motor) with drive wheels and pulleys attached to it and belts subsequently
running to whatever tools we decide to show. Now the question part-
although we have done quite a bit of research regarding how a system like
this operated, we are looking for a place which might be able to supply us
with the cast-iron pulleys, and possibly also the leather belts which were
common on these kinds of set-ups. In addition, we are looking to possibly
purchase a mid to late 19th century wood lathe (or reproduction of such)
which could be run off the belts we set up. If anybody could help us, or
can suggest a place to look/call, etc. it would be appreciated.
