I am in the process of developing a proposal for funding to develop a
Jewish nomenclature, for use by Jewish museums as well as general museums
that have Judaica or specifically Jewish artifacts in their collections.
I am hoping to do this under the auspices of the Council of American
Jewish Museums (CAJM), a national organization of which my museum is a
member. I also hope that this project could serve as a model for other
groups of museums with particular nomenclature needs, such as Hispanic
museums. So I have two questions for all of you wise folks in Museum-L land:
1 - are there other organizations out there like CAJM that unite museums
of other specialties/ethnic groupings? For example, as I pretty much
ignored this recent thread, is there some sort of organziation for
railroad or transportation museums?
2- Do any of these specialized communities of museums perceive a need for
a specialized nomenclature? Has anyone, beyond an individual museum,
developed one? Is this an issue for other museum communities as it is
within the Jewish museum world?
TIA for your help. By the way, I recently joined a list based on one of
my personal interests, and have come to appreciate museum-l
tremendously. This is a helpful, friendly place, and most people here
have a great sense of humor. Please keep up the fun, as well the useful
info!
