The Orange County Historical Museum (the one in Florida) is in the
schematic design phase of a project to convert a 1926 courthouse
building into a regional history center. I have been asked to post a
request for information on the ratio of "public space" to "support
space" at other historical museums in the 50,000-100,000 square foot
range. We are specifically interested in percentages of total square
footage devoted to permanent exhibits, changing exhibits, administrative
offices, collection storage, exhibit prep, and reference libraries.
Comments on the success and/or shortcomings of such space use decisions
would also be appreciated.
