David: You are right on. As recently as when Paul Perrot came to the
Smithsonian about 25 years ago as Ass't Sec'y for Museum Programs, his
official title was director of the National Museum. Frank Taylor has the
s predecessor. I don't think it has ever been abolished, butcertainly
not used.  SI archives could confirm its usage.  Jane Glaser
