I don't know about a "standards manual," but I do know that the
Metropolitan redid their signage recently - 1993 sounds about right. It
involved an intensive effort, not just in the design of individual signs
(although they're quite nice) but also in completely rethinking how the
museum directed its visitors around. It was covered fairly extensively in
the design press at the time (perhaps winning an ID award? I can't
remember....) You might want to check the "Reader's Guide to Periodical
Literature" under the museum name.
