In response to the question about what really  happens, it varies and, however
it varies, it should be in keeping with the museum's collection management poli
cy.  Sometimes the material goes to the education program, sometimes it can be
sent to a university, sometimes it is simply discarded if there is no fiscal
value and there are no takers.
