This is not my area of expertise, but simplifying peoples lives is! At a
conference last summer, I ran into a man who had just published an
article about how he had catalogued his own (large) personal collection.
The article is entitled "Why and How I put My Collection On my Home
Computer-Easily, Reliably and Inexpensively." The author is L. Dennis
Shapiro and it was published in Manuscripts Vol. XLVII, No. 2, Spring
1995. He sent me an off-print.
The key here, in my mind, is EASY, RELIABLE, INEXPENSIVE. He reviews
home finance programs like Managing you Money (MYM) for DOS, Windows and
MAC (apparently good for collections management); Quicken for MAC and
Quiken Deluxe for Windows.
It's a great article, check it out.
