The Tule Lake National Wildlife Refuge, of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service, encompasses the site of a German and Italian POW camp.
Several buildings still stand on the property. The camp was
originally built for use by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Nearby,
but off the refuge, is the site of the Tulelake Japanese internment
camp.
There is an area in the vicinity (on National Park Service Land) where
petroglyphs can be found. Amongst the prehistoric carvings are a few
Japanese names. The story is they represent a few escapees from the
Tulelake Camp.
The Fish and Wildlife Service has very limited information on the site
as an internment center. However the Klamath County Museum in the
nearby town of Lakeview, Oregon, has a small display on the subject.
The address is: Klamath County Museum, 1415 Main, Klamath Falls,
Oregon 97601. (503) 883-4208.
