Summer Institute of Local History
His 709 (graduate) and His 410 (undergraduate)
There is still time to register for the 12th annual Summer Institute of
Local History to be conducted at Salem State College Salem, Massachusetts
from August 7 to August 11. The theme will be Uncovering the People's
History: Folk Culture in the Community. The selection of
this theme is in recognition that until the recent past, the history of the
people has been left unrecorded, leaving them historically voiceless.
It is the intention of this institute to provide educators,
museum/historical staff members, and laypeople with the knowledge and
skills which will aid them in giving voice to the people.
The institute is designed to illuminate local patterns which
reflect on concerns such as integration, assimilation, community
structure and multiculturalism. The institute, taught by a professional
staff that will include historians, geographers and folklorists, will utilize
folk performers and visits to the Chinese community of Boston and the
Armenian community of Watertown. On the opening night a social hour
will be followed by dinner at a historical site. Sessions will include
Uncovering the People s Past: The Role of Material Culture;
The People s Way: Folk Art in the Curriculum;
The People's History is Everywhere: A Practical Guide to Field Work;
The People's Voice: Oral History and the Preservation of Folk Culture.
The institute meets in formal sessions August 7-9. Thursday and
Friday, August 10 and 11, are set aside as research and consultation days.
The institute offers both graduate and undergraduate credit.
Salem is located twenty miles north of Boston on Massachusetts North Shore,
one of the most historically renowned areas of the United States.
Registration is $450.00 for all participants and includes coffee/donuts
and refreshments each day in session; 3 luncheons, social hour and banquet;
