From David Phillips in Art Gallery and Museum Studies, History of
Art, University of Manchester, replying to M. Rebecca Leuchak's query
about places to see of a six week tour of innovation in European
Museums.

A restrained selection, since hopefully you will get lots of response:

In the UK two outstanding museums recently set up to address community
issues have included an exceptional degree of local consultation.
One is St. Mungo's Museum in Glasgow, essentially a museum of
comparative religion in a city with a fair share of divergency in
that line. The other is Croydon Clocktower Museum, which describes
itself as a unique interactive museum about local peope's lives.

In Germany, for architecture, Hans Hollein's galleries of
contemporary art in Munchengladbach and Frankfurt are exceptional,
though some commentators think they compete with the exhibits.

Turning the question around, a colleague (Neil Walker, keeper of art
in Nottingham Castle) and Emma Clifton, who is one of our students,
would both be glad to hear of similar recommendations in respect of
innovative intrepretation of the visual arts in North America. Any
schemes which introduce something truly new would be of interest.

We are also interested in semi-permanent childrens facilities, and
in hands-on in connection with visual arts in particular. I guess
the Kraft General Foods Education Centre in Chicago, the Education
Forum in Montreal, and the Childrens' Gallery in the High Museum of
Art in Atlanta (is the gallery still there? - I don't think it's
mentioned on their homepage) are the best known. We would be
interested in comments on these and information about similarly long
term installations.

Thanks
