You might want to take a look at George Peter Murdock's _Outline of
World Cultures_ (New Haven, CT, US:  HRAF Press).  It has gone through
several editions, don't know the most recent nor the date.  HRAF is the
Human Relations Area Files, and Murdock's _Outline_ is a set of alpha-
numeric codes for ethno-linguistic groups for the whole world.  We have
used it, with some modifications to suit our own needs, for a number of
