Marcus and the rest,

Alright, I wasn't being called a scoundrel, a liar or a cheat. I snuff out
all flames here and now.

Jim

>Jim,
>
>First of all i did not flame you as i said before no flame intended and i am

>not have you specifically in mind.

>I know jim how much time it takes to keep the list up and how to find new
>museums on the internet. i did not target you list or your hard work! We
>both know how long it takes to get this stuff up and running.
>
>i am just sick of people (no names again) that take the information from the

>I am also not implying that you have simply duplicated my list here.... You
>know as well as i do that the museum list in yahoo is not complete or even
>up to date most of the time.

>The list of museums and other resources such as galleries and exhibitions
>come from quite a few sources as well....and hard to keep updated at all times.

>the information that i am providing here is free to everyone to enjoy and use.
>however, the stealing and copying of the list are gross copyright
>infringements and should really be followed.... but you as well as i know
>that it would take too much time and money to do so..... why should all that
>work not be my own and stay that way..... it really reminds me of plagarism
>and other unethical behavior.
>
>let's say you are publishing a book and you have the copyright.,.... the

>>Marcus, John and all!
>>
>>Since Marcus seems to want to denigrate my work...I'll explain to one and
>>to all how I update my list of museums. I am not in competition with
>>anyone, and the information I acquire is freely available to anyone.
>>
>>I get about 10-20 new listings per month via the form on our page designed
>>to add new sites to the list.
>>
>>The remainder I find by following links provided by other institutions, and
>>this includes the following indexes listed in Yahoo:
>>
>>
>> Berkeley Subway
>> Guide to Museums and Cultural Centers
>> Hands-on Science Centers Worldwide
>> a strong emphasis on interactive science education.
>> History of Science: Museums
>> WWW Virtual Library
>> Sunsite based Multimedia exhibits and expositions
>> U.C. Berkeley Museum Informatics Project
>>
>>Some links I find by email correspondence with other web managers, for
>>instance, I believe that I have the only listing of South American museums.
>>
>>My information is NOT comprehensive. The Newark site provides good
>>descriptions of the museums as well as the URLs. I've found that I don't
>>generally have time to include much supplimentary information.
>>
>>I check the link before I add it to make sure that it is still active and I
>>sometimes 'extract' some information from the site to provide a basic
>>description.
>>
>>Marcus seems to imply that I have simply duplicated the pages that he
>>maintains in my own. If he was aware of the amount of time I spend
>>maintaining the list, I think he would be ashamed of his attitude.
>>
>>I would like to say that I maintain the list as a service to the museum
>>community, and as a gateway for visitors to discover our own WWW site. I
>>have absolutely no problem with other institutions or persons using the
>>information I've gathered (unless maybe they are trying to make a
>>profit...and even there I'm not sure there is anything to object to), or I
>>wouldn't make it available on this list.
>>
>>And Marcus, what exactly do you mean by 'originally compiled and
>>researched'? How exactly do you learn about new museums on the web?
>>
>>Jim

>>>you might also be interested in the list of museums at the world wide arts

>>>
>>>that is undoubtedly where other people, i won't mention names, got their
>>>list of museums from......
>>>
>>>(no flame intended, but certain lists look too close to be all originally
>>>compiled and researched..... i have been working on this list for over a
>>>year now. My list is copyrighted so if you would like to include this list
>>>with the descriptions personally entered by me (that is how it is becomes
>>>copyrighted in its entirety) let me know and i will be more than happy to
>>>let you have a copy) :)
>>>
>>>soon, i will also have a completely searcheable database that you can
>>>finally find the information that you are looking for!
>>>
>>>hope you enjoy this site and respect the copyright restrictions.
