The British Association of Friends of Museums (BAFM) is the largest group
of museum users, supporters and volunteers in Britain and the largest
organisation of its kind in Europe. It is totally independent, run
entirely by volunteers who are all active supporters of museums. A
registered charity, it is structured but not bureaucratic; it is dedicated
to supporting and informing those who run membership groups and those who
want to help museums whether as Friends or volunteers. The Association
also works to make the views and contribution of Friends and volunteers
better known.
BAFM publishes a newsletter three times a year, an Annual Journal
(Museum Visitor) and a number of advice sheets, which are available to
members (including a 'How to Start' guide). Meetings are arranged both
regionally and nationally and a useful working relationship has been
established with other organisations in the wider museum community.
