To perform subscription functions for a listserv list always
send mail to the listserv. (Once you are subscribed to a list then
send your list mail MESSAGES to the list address.)
The list address for museum-l would be [log in to unmask]
The listserv address would be [log in to unmask]
The listserv commands listed below can be used with any listserv.
These are the common listserv commands; there are others.
I will use museum-l as the example list.
Send mail to [log in to unmask]
Leave the SUBJECT line blank.
In the BODY of the message place any of the following commands:
(To subscribe) sub MUSEUM-L John Doe
(To unsubscribe) signoff MUSEUM-L
(To stop list mail temporarily, set MUSEUM-L nomail
for a vacation, for example)
(To restart mail) set MUSEUM-L mail
Many lists have a "digest" option. This means that all the mail for
a set time period (usually daily, sometimes weekly) is gathered
together and sent to you as ONE mail message instead of as many
individual messages.
(To start the digest feature) set MUSEUM-L digest
(To turn off digest and resume set MUSEUM-L mail
normal mail delivery)
(To receive a copy of any set MUSEUM-L repro
messages you send to the list)
(To stop receiving copies of set MUSEUM-L norepro
your own messages)
(To receive an acknowledgement set MUSEUM-L ack
when you send mail to the list)
(To stop receiving set MUSEUM-L noack
acknowledgement messages)
(To confirm your subscription) confirm MUSEUM-L
(To see your personal query MUSEUM-L
distribution options)
(To get subscription list and review MUSEUM-L
list header)
(To get list header only) review MUSEUM-L short
(If you want very general help
help/info. send a help
command to listserv)
REMEMBER, do not put anything else in the BODY of your message
but the commands listed above, not even your signature file.
Note that it is possible for anyone to determine you are signed
up to a list through the use of the "review" command, which
returns the network address and name of all the subscribers.
If you don't want your name to be available to others in this
fashion, just issue a set MUSEUM-L conceal command to
listserv; set MUSEUM-L noconceal will make you "public" again.
Remember, when you send messages to a listserv you are sending
commands to a computer, not sending mail to a person. Watch
your syntax!
Hope this helps
