The annual meeting of the Mid-Continent University Natural History
Museum consortium will be held at the Natural History Museum of the
University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kansas from 7-9 March 1996. All
interested parties are invited to register and attend.
The meeting will include presentations on the topic of "bio-informatics"--
ways in which museums can make collection-based data available and useful
to other museums, the public, and the corporate world, how museums
can prepare to participate in these initiatives, and why they are
important. Presenters will include Leonard Krishtalka, James Beach (NSF),
Meredith Lane, and (hopefully) Julian Humphries.
Other topics to be addressed include "Ethically Troubling Collections"
and deaccession (presenters to include Russ Shafer-Landau, professor of
philosophy at KU); and a panel discussion on dealing with legislatures.
Several other topics for discussion are also under development.
