IMS (Institue of Museum Services) uses the following categories for
defining museums in their grant applications:

        Aquarium
        Arboretum/Botanical Garden
        Art
        Children's/Youth
General (two or more disciplines represented equally)
        Historic House/Site
        History
        Natural History/Anthropology
        Nature Center
        Planetarium
        Science/Technology
        Zoo
Specialized (limited to one narrowly defined discipline)

Hope that this helps!
