I would suggest you contact Dr. Richard Wolbers at the University of
Deleware.  He is Associate Professor of Conservation, and a biochemist
who worked with the
Salk Institute before turning to conservation.
The conservation field needs your skills;  combine your current interests
with your professional experience and look into the conservation field.
