Collections Assistant/Assistant Archivist
One Year Position/Possible One Year Extension

The National Canal Museum in Easton PA seeks an individual to assist
the Collections Manager/Archivist in processing, cataloging, and maintaining
the museum's library, archival, and artifact collections. The primary initial
responsibility will be to inventory a large private collection of artifacts,
books, films, and papers for accession or appropriate disposition.
The museum concentrates on the history of canal transportation in the
United States and on the industrial development spurred by the canals, with
particular emphasis on the anthracite coal industry and the early iron and
steel industry. A new National Canal Museum will be opening in the summer of
1996.
The museum's collection consists of material related to transportation
and industrial history. The private collection includes the records of a
furniture company, including furniture samples, and a personal collection
emphasizing railroads, local historical artifacts, books, and films. This is a
one year position with a good possibility of being extended for a second year.
Since items are located at various sites, a vehicle is required.
Because of budget and time constraints, interviewing preference may be
given to individuals in the Mid-Atlantic region.

Qualifications:

Minimum: Bachelor's degree with some experience in artifact cataloging and/or
archival processing. Ability to work independently.

Preferred: Master's degree in American History/Studies or Library Studies with
archival and/or museum collections experience. Knowledge of transportation,
business, and industrial history.

Salary: $18,000-20,000 plus benefits.
