This is a sticky question about a sticky subject. Our curator
emeritus was in the habit of setting off monthly tick and flea bombs
as a pest control method. When I just redid an exhibit that involved
handling mannequins dressed in fur parkas I was forcefully reminded
of a problem resulting from this practice ( which , by the way is no
longer being done). All the furs have a truly nasty, sticky feel and
left me with black hands. Obviously several years' dust accumulation
is firmly attached to the fur. Yechh! What do I do?? I'm not only
concerned about the current problem of having to handle these things
and the fact that they are dirty, but what is the long term effect of
thet bug spray on the fur? Any help and advice will be appreciated,
and I will say thanks in advance because I've learned from
bittersweet experience that I will get enough help that I'll be up to
my ears in implementing and will not be able to spring time to
individually say thanks.
If someone would forward this to the conservation-l (seems like I've
seen one mentioned), I'd appreciate it. And if such a list is not a
figment of my bug-spray clouded mind, how do I subscribe?
Thanks,
Mariana
